Fighter encompasses any combat-trained person who uses mêlée weapons. Characters trained in only missile or bow weapons are covered by the Archer Class. Fighters are usually strong, enduring types, skilled in two, three or more weapon proficiencies. They may, of course, have other weapon proficiencies but these are probably in conjunction to their profession as opposed to the main skills desired or required (i.e. guards may be trained in spear and sword, but could also have flail or axe learned on their own in other circumstances or picked up along the way). Once a mêlée weapon proficiency reaches 1000 XP it gains a +1 BV for that weapon only. This may be achieved many times, each time adding to the BV bonus cumulatively. In addition to this would be the Weapon Use Bonus that applies to all classes.
Fighters are usually clad in armour of some sort and carry a couple of weapon at least, a back-up should one fall or falter. A good fighter does not have to be clever, nor a clever fighter strong, but the skill needed to remain at peek performance needs constant practice and training.
Armour is often heavy and cumbersome, but offers essential protection during combat. Armour needs care and maintenance to preserve its usefulness; also it should not be worn constantly. Fighters below Adept can only wear light armours and only carry up to medium sized shields. Adept fighters to Master fighters can wear any form of armour except full plate armour and may carry a large sized shield., but Adepts may only wear heavy armours and a large shield for single combats, with some respite between each combat. Over exertion will result in fatigue and therefore a loss of BV. Hero and Superhero fighters can wear any form of armour that they please and suffer no ill effects at all.
Training given is usually by a teacher of at least two levels higher than the pupil. This means no-one can be taught once they reach Level 5 other than perhaps a new weapon type or other skill.
