The differing kinds of barding are all made from the same armour types as humanoids wear. These are listed below, along with the cost and weight. Each item has linked further information. Entries in Blue are from the Player's Handbook, entries in mauve are from Dragon Magazine, entries in maroon are from Dungeon Magazine and entries in light green are my own creation.

* A mount wearing heavy barding moves at only triple its normal speed when running instead of quadruple. |
Barding typically covers the head, neck, chest, body, and possibly legs of a mount. Barding made of medium or heavy armour provides better protection than light barding, but at the expense of speed.
Armour for a horse (a Large non-humanoid creature) costs four times as much as a humanoid, as noted in the table above. Medium or heavy barding slows a mount that wears it as shown on the table above.
Putting barding on a mount takes a long time and the Donning Barding Table shows the typical time taken to don or remove barding from a mount. Don shows the time taken to put on the barding. Don Hastily shows the time taken to put on barding if done in a hurry and Remove is the time taken to remove barding from a mount.

1: With aid, half the listed time. A
single character doing nothing else can help one or two adjacent
characters 2: Must have two people donning this barding. Without help it can only be donned hastily. |
