Forull Qredg:
This is a summoning of an elemental spirit; the term applied by the Scalbraner to elementals. The elemental summoned is determined by several factors, the summoner, the power of the summoner and the elemental they are trying to summon, and the vicinity of elementals to where the summoner performs the ritual.
A practitioner of this ritual may elect to begin the ritual by having a definite elemental in mind. this may be an individual elemental known to reside in the area or a particular type or form of elemental. This factor also seems dependent upon the nature of the summoner. It is varied and individual for each summoner that performs the ritual, but once summoned, the elemental tends to always be that form or type from then on, unless the summoner tries to summon a different specific, or variant, elemental. Summoning a specific type or individual elemental involves the summoner using this specific type or individual, as a focus as they perform the ritual. Specific elementals influence the success of the ritual depending upon their familiarity to the summoner and their type. Unique, rare or new elementals can cause the ritual to double in time, halve in duration, reduce or increase the success chance or need more components to be utilized or else more powerful components from those usually used.
The power of the summoner and that of the elemental may affect the outcome of a ritual. It may either cause the ritual to fail, if the summoner is not of equal standing to the elemental or it may be that the elemental summoned is too different from that the summoner expected or wished for. As the ritual is performed the summoner's focus is a form of path along which the elemental may be called or urged to follow. The power of the elemental summoned may be too powerful for the summoner to hold, and as soon as it arrives, it departs again, the summoner unable to be recognised as a suitable candidate for the elemental to relate too, or else the elemental may appear in its natural form and the summoner is unable to keep the elemental together so that some form of communication can occur. Low power summoners' can usually only summon base or small elementals, or perhaps those in their natural state. Powerful elementals need powerful summoners' or else when they arrive they will feel no regard for the summoner and may react as they wish, including rebuking the summoner, the area, or just leaving. Powerful and experienced summoners may be able to easily call elementals of medium to low or base levels and can halve the time, or increase the success chance to maximum. Often a powerful summoner can specify in their focus which individual elemental they summon as long as it is low or base.
The vicinity of the elemental being summoned is also a factor in successful summoning. Summoning a water elemental to a remote part of a desolate, arid location could be nearly impossible for all but the most powerful summoners. Like-wise, summoning a specific elemental can either be easier or harder if they are close or far away at the time of the summoning. This factor can increase or decrease the time, or the quality of the components or indeed the success chance may be reduced dramatically. The only part unaffected is the duration as there is no minimum duration, elementals do not follow necessarily rules of Manc or logic.
Once the elemental does arrive, the summoner usually shows some form of gratitude, in the form of an offering, further, but much shorter ritual, or even by giving some of their life-essence to the elemental to help ensure it reacts accordingly and as wished. There may be a short period of stillness, as both summoner and the elemental decide how best to communicate. Again, usually, when it is the first calling of an elemental, or when the summoner is inexperienced or the elemental is of great power, the summoner will enter a trance-like state, and the elemental will physically appear and a form of telepathic and empathic communication begins. Later, or with lesser elementals, the summoner may be able to act normally, maybe even perform some other action or task, while communicating, and the elemental need not always manifest, but have some small vestige of its presence in the vicinity. Some communications seem to last for days in the summoner's perspective, but in fact last little more than a breeze, or a drop of water etc.
Summoning an elemental is not like summoning a sentient being, such as a demon, or spirit. there is no bargain exactly, but more akin to getting an animal to do your bidding, by offering some reward. The rewards differ greatly. Offerings, sanctity of the elemental's element, or even some life-essence given up to feed the elemental. Powerful summoners may not need rewards, but their very power is sustenance to the elemental. Interacting with elementals seems to leave some trace element or mark, that other elementals can detect.
To get the elemental to do the summoner's bidding is either a form of request, beguiling, or demand. this again all depends upon the summoner's power, the power of the elemental, the frequency of the elemental having responded to the summoner previously, the time of day, place of summoning, and even just how on of the pair feel at the time; there are many reasons.
Elementals can almost always leave as and when they wish, they are not governed by feelings or morals as mortals and most summoners are. They have a law only unto themselves, and each element is variable, even among elementals that may be considered alignment-led, such as elements of Good, Law, or Chaos.
The table below shows the form the ritual takes. The time the form needs to be fully completed. Components required to attempt the ritual. The base success chance of the ritual working as wished. The maximum chance this ritual has of working assuming typical and average conditions, modifiers to this will be mentioned in the applicable text for that form. Minimum duration is the shortest length of the communication after the ritual, once successfully attempted, of course it may be ended by the summoner at any time observing any principles set out for that form.
FORM | TIME | COMPONENTS | SUCCESS CHANCE | MAXIMUM % CHANCE | MINIMUM DURATION |
Ritual | Varies (1 Passage minimum) |
Mind-focusing, or chanting, or burning, or washing etc. A small amount of the element to be summoned, or the antithesis, or a sacred or cultural symbol, or life-essence, or a force of will etc. |
1% per Passage (+2% for each time this elemental or type summoned before) | 80% + Level of Darsha | No minimum duration |
